Landlord Friendly Rental Home Decorating

After your search for rental homes in Decatur, GA is over and you've found the perfect place, decorating your new home is the next step. But before you start painting walls or hanging artwork, keep in mind there might be restrictions on the changes you can make in house rentals. When leasing an apartment or house, landlord friendly decorating is crucial. Here are some ideas for making your new space fun, stylish and rental appropriate.

 Colorful Accessories

Utilizing accessories like pillows, throw rugs and curtains in your rental home is a great way to add personality without compromising the existing structure of the building. Choose colors, prints and patterns that reflect your sense of style to create a vibrant, inviting space. When bringing together multiple accessories, coordinate by finding similar hues or patterns for a cohesive look.

 Dual-Purpose Furniture

Furniture is a must-have in any home, so why not use it for more than one thing? By selecting pieces of furniture which are not only functional, but also have a distinct style, you’ll be serving two purposes at the same time. Don’t be afraid of a couch that features a bright color or a dining table that has a painted design; these pieces of furniture will add a splash of fun to the room and become focal points for guests to admire.

Furniture that also serves as storage is a great option for house rentals tight on space. Place extra linens, board games, off-season clothing or any other items not in frequent use in a storage ottoman that can double as seating, a foot rest or an accent piece in any room.

Work with What You've Been Given

Sometimes, house rentals don’t have everything on your wish list. Maybe your rental home is a little too retro or too modern for your preferred style. But just because you won’t be able to make drastic changes to the home in order to create a personally appealing design, doesn’t mean you can’t work with what you’ve been given. Try layering rugs over flooring you don’t particularly like, even carpet, to define the space and add texture and color. If you’re not too crazy about a particular color in a room, bring in colors you do like with accessories and other accents, drawing attention away from the undesirable aspects.

If Painting the Walls Isn't an Option…

Try covering the walls in other ways. Peel away decals are now widely available for covering walls rather than traditional wallpaper. These easily removable options provide decorative details without the damage that ordinary wallpaper causes. If your landlord allows holes in the walls, mirrors and artwork can be good options for camouflaging what you don’t like. Large mirrors not only make rooms appear more spacious, they also take up a great amount of wall space, minimizing the effect the existing paint color or wallpaper might have. Hanging drapes over walls (even where there aren’t windows) allow you to add color, prints and patterns, as well as texture to a space. They also serve to draw the eye up, lengthening the wall and giving the appearance of higher ceilings.

If you can’t paint walls but still want to have a similar effect, paint your furniture instead. A few pieces painted in beautiful colors will give your new space the same feel as a fresh coat of paint on the walls.
